Title: Neeraj Chopra Ends Coaching Partnership with Jan Zelezny
Neeraj Chopra, the celebrated javelin thrower and two-time Olympic medalist, announced on Saturday that he has concluded his coaching relationship with Czech coach Jan Zelezny after just one season. Chopra described their time together as one filled with advancement, mutual respect, and a deep passion for athletics. While he did not reveal the specific reasons for ending this collaboration, he acknowledged Zelezny’s significant influence on his career, particularly as the renowned coach helped him surpass the 90-meter mark last year.
Chopra reflected on the experience of training under Zelezny, whom he has admired since childhood. He expressed that learning from such a legendary figure was a dream come true, providing him with a diverse “toolbox” of exercises, technical insights, and innovative approaches to the sport. “Working with Jan has opened my eyes to many new concepts. His understanding of technique, rhythm, and movement is remarkable, and I gained valuable lessons from every session,” Chopra remarked. He emphasized the friendship he developed with Zelezny, stating, “Jan is not only the greatest javelin thrower in history, but also one of the finest individuals I have ever encountered.”
Zelezny, who is 59 years old, also shared his positive thoughts on their partnership and the strides they made together. “Collaborating with an athlete like Neeraj has been a wonderful experience. I am pleased that we crossed paths and managed to work together, especially as he broke the 90-meter barrier for the first time,” he noted. Zelezny highlighted Chopra’s impressive record, mentioning that aside from the World Championships, he consistently finished in the top two. He acknowledged that a back injury shortly before the Tokyo Olympics adversely affected Chopra’s performance.
Looking ahead, Zelezny expressed confidence in Chopra’s potential. “Our relationship remains strong on a personal level, and we will continue to stay connected. We will surely meet again at training camps or perhaps during family vacations in Europe or India,” he said.
As for his future, Chopra is eager to take control of his coaching journey. “I am excited about what lies ahead in 2026. I began my training in early November. My primary goal is to maintain my health, and I am looking forward to competing again soon,” he stated. He also mentioned his aspirations for the World Championships in 2027 and the ultimate objective of the 2028 Olympic Games. Notably, Chopra finished eighth at the World Championships after achieving a 90-meter throw at the Doha Diamond League last year.
